In the age of artificial intelligence, even the smallest interactions like saying "please" and "thank you" to your AI assistant carry an unseen energy cost. While these exchanges may seem trivial, they are part of a larger conversation about the environmental impact of AI and the steps we can take to mitigate it.

The Energy Appetite of AI

AI systems, particularly large language models, are powered by data centres that consume vast amounts of power. According to recent reports, global data centres used approximately 415 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity in 2024, accounting for about 1.5% of global power usage. This figure is expected to more than double by 2030, potentially reaching 945 TWh. To put this into perspective, the upper estimate would surpass Japan's current total electricity consumption.

The energy demand is driven by "digital workloads" such as AI model training, video streaming, and cloud computing. While advancements in server technology have improved processing power, they have also exponentially increased electricity consumption. This growing energy appetite poses a significant challenge to global climate goals.

Sustainability Initiatives: A Step in the Right Direction

Amidst these challenges, companies like ours are stepping up with innovative sustainability initiatives. For instance, we plant a tree for every order placed, contributing to reforestation and carbon offsetting efforts. While such initiatives may seem like a drop in the ocean, they represent a crucial step towards balancing the environmental impact of technology.

Planting trees not only absorbs carbon dioxide but also supports biodiversity and improves soil health. When combined with other measures, such as investing in renewable energy and improving energy efficiency, these efforts can collectively make a meaningful difference.

Earth Week: A Time for Reflection and Action

As the world uses AI more, we all have a role to play. Being mindful of how we interact with AI systems and supporting companies that prioritise sustainability can amplify the impact of these initiatives. Every small action, from choosing eco-friendly products to advocating for greener technologies, contributes to a larger movement towards a sustainable future.

In conclusion, while the energy cost of AI is a pressing issue, it also presents an opportunity for innovation and collective action. By embracing sustainability initiatives and making conscious choices, we can work towards a future where technology and the environment coexist harmoniously.
